Report On Business®
The ISM® Manufacturing and Non-Manufacturing Report On Business® are the first economic reports available the first and third business day of each month, which has been consistently accurate in indicating the direction of the overall economy in addition to the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors. ISM’s Manufacturing and Non-Manufacturing Business Survey Committees provide the monthly data results for each report.
The Manufacturing ISM® Report On Business® is considered by many economists to be the most reliable near-term economic barometer available. Except for a four-year interruption during World War II, the Report has been published monthly since 1931 for the guidance of supply management practitioners, economists, analysts, and government and business leaders. The report indicates changes for 11 indexes comparing the current month to the previous month. The PMI®, a composite index, attracts the most attention. The PMI is a composite of five indexes in the report: New Orders (seasonally adjusted), Production (seasonally adjusted), Employment (seasonally adjusted), Supplier Deliveries (seasonally adjusted) and Inventories.

The Non-Manufacturing ISM® Report On Business® was developed in 1998 and reports changes to 11 indexes, including a composite NMI® index calculated as an indicator of the overall economic condition for the non-manufacturing sector based on the diffusion indexes for four of the indicators with equal weights: Business Activity (seasonally adjusted), New Orders (seasonally adjusted), Employment (seasonally adjusted) and Supplier Deliveries.
